Nursery Schools

UCF has set up two nursery schools; one in Neboda and one in Madatugama.  Both schools are run by well-trained teachers and staff.  These nursery schools serve as an outreach to their respective communities by providing a basic educational foundation for the children prior to the beginning of their primary educations.

Madatugama Nursery School

Madatugama is a small, predominantly Buddhist, village.  Most of the families in the village are farmers by trade.  UCF began working among the children of this village 20 years ago.  Before this, there was no nursery school in the area for the children to attend, so starting a nursery school was a great opportunity to assist the community’s needs.  This project began in a small hut with only 6 children.  It has since grown to have 75 children, and its own permanent building.  The purpose was to educate the children and also to help provide for some of their other basic needs.  Manal is the only Christian witness in this village, and she has dedicated her life to helping the children of this village by running the Madatugama Nursery School.  The villagers greatly appreciate the work that UCF has done over the years in providing for the needs of their children.

Neboda Nursery School

Neboda Nursery School is located in a Tamil community.  The school currently has 15 children enrolled, who attend classes Monday through Friday.  The children mostly come from impoverished families working on the surrounding rubber plantations in the area.  Their parents are laborers in the factories on the rubber plantations and as such have no permanent income.  They live in temporary housing without electricity or proper drinking water.  These families must survive on less than $3 per day.  As a result, children sometimes go without food at home.  Therefore, the nursery school began a feeding program for the children to ensure that they receive proper nutrition.  The nursery school also helps to provide children with other basic needs, such as medicine and clothing. Nirmala Selvaseelan is the headmistress of the nursery school, and she works on a volunteer basis.
