Humanitarian Relief

One of the major concerns in UCF’s mission to improve the lives and well-being of the Sri Lankan people is its humanitarian relief projects.  These projects include emergency relief to provide much-needed supplies in disaster-stricken areas, distribution of mosquito nets to protect against the threats of malaria and dengue, and work among victims from the decades-long civil war, which ended in 2009.

REPORT ON THE RELIEF PROGRAMS CARRIED OUT IN: NEBODA AND MORATUWA - 19TH AND 20TH FEBRUARY 2022

SATURDAY 19TH – NEBODA Neboda has a community of labourers working on the rubber plantations. Many of these families are going through much hardship to carry on their day to day living as due to the pandemic situation they are not getting work and have no income. Some of these families are believers who attend our Bethel Fellowship Center. On the 19th instant, Rev. Ranjan Fernando conducted a relief program where parcels of food items containing rice, dhal, sugar, tea bags, liquid milk and biscuits were distributed amongst needy families within the church and in the surrounding areas. This is very helpful for these families especially because they have small children and cannot afford the basic food items for their day-to-day living. School supplies of bags and stationery were also given to the children to encourage them to attend school. Please remember the ministry in Neboda in your prayers, the pastor, his wife and 2 small children. Also, the lady co-worker here. Please pray that God will provide the needed resources for their monthly allowances, medical and utility bills. This is a long standing ongoing ministry.
SUNDAY 20TH - MORATUWA There are many families who are believers in the fishing community of Moratuwa who attend our Church. After the service parcels of food items containing rice, dhal, sugar, tea bags, liquid milk and biscuits were distributed amongst these believer families as well as others living in the fishing community. School supplies of bags and stationery were also given to the children to encourage them to attend school. We are grateful for the support of our prayer partners without which we would not have been able to continue this work and keep this ministry ongoing. Both his kidneys are damaged due to the issues with the water in this area according to the medical authorities. Every 3 days he has to go to the hospital to undergo dialysis. On most days, neighbours provide her with food. After the open-air service Rev. Fernando visited her as she is a new comer to our church in Dambulla. He was touched to hear of her sad situation. The house is surrounded by poisonous snakes including cobras. Also wild elephants in the area create hardship for the villagers. In this situation she has to walk far to use someone’s toilet which is not safe. The UCF is desirous of constructing a basic toilet for her use hence was able to start this project.

Rev. Ranjan Fernando visited Kandy on the 9th of January for a meeting with Bishop emeritus Shantha Francis of the Kurunegala diocese, Church of Ceylon to discuss some UCF ministry matters. On Monday 10th Rev. Fernando visited Pussallawa to participate in a relief program where many families going through hardship were provided with dry ration packs. These families are living under very difficult circumstances having been affected by the pandemic. Most of them are laborers on the tea plantations and are very low wage earners. Due to the high cost of living there is a shortage of food and the families who received this food relief were very grateful to the UCF for this service. We have been working in Pussallawa area for the past few years and have held services and provided relief to needy families from time to time. Please pray that God will provide the needed resources enabling the UCF to continue these projects demonstrating Christian compassion for the needy amongst us.

RELIEF PROGRAM CARRIED OUT IN BETHEL FELLOWSHIP CENTERS - MORATUWA AND NEBODA - RELIEF PROGRAM CARRIED OUT IN BETHEL FELLOWSHIP CENTERS - MORATUWA AND NEBODA

We are glad to report that on the 28th of February, we were able to distribute parcels of dry rations containing various important food items to 50 needy families from the fishing community in Moratuwa which also includes believers who attend our church. The distribution took place after the Sunday service and all who received this relief were very appreciative of the service and thankful the UCF have considered their plight. In the afternoon of the same day, Rev. Ranjan Fernando visited the UCF center in Neboda and after the Sunday service there, provided 40 families with these parcels of dry rations. This was very helpful for these families as they are daily wage earners working in the rubber plantations surrounding our church and due to the pandemic situation, have no income at all right now. We extend our humble thanks to all our prayer partners who have assisted us to purchase these items, so we can help these needy families. We look forward to your continued support as we need more resources for this purpose.

1) STORY OF MRS. UKKUAMMA

Ukkuamma is 85 years old, living all alone in a makeshift hut without doors, windows and a proper roof. The roof is temporarily covered with rusted tin sheets, plastic covering, pieces of wood etc. Rev. Fernando met Ukkuamma when he distributed food relief in this village close to where she is living. She was also one of the beneficiaries of the food items and with tears in her eyes expressed her thanks and appreciation for same. She praised God that someone looked at her and saw her struggling to live. Her children and grandchildren are living separately far away from her and not concerned with her well being. On some days people of the village give her meals but not all the time. The most urgent need is a toilet facility as she has no such facility and is using someone else’s toilet when needed. She also does not have electricity and drinking water. Considering the great need of a toilet especially in this her old age, we are thinking of building a simple latrine covered with wood for her, which will cost approx. USD 1000/-. This will be a great blessing for her so she can make use of this facility without having to walk far to use someone else’s one. We pray for God’s grace and blessings upon this aged lady and wait upon the Lord for the needed resources so we can go ahead with this project.

Living in little wooden huts sometimes 5-6 people in one room sleeping on the floor. The UCF has identified these families to provide this food. The Feed the Hunger programme is an encouragement and blessing to these destitute children. We monitor the growth of the children time to time as well. There is one family who helps in cooking the food and some curries to have with it so that it is a bit tastier and the children really enjoy eating this food. Their weight is also improving gradually after having this food. So we thank God for His grace and mercy and are thankful for the Feed the Hunger Programme support for these needy children in Sri Lanka.

Landslide Disaster Relief Programmes - November 2014

Many thousands of laborers work and live on the hilly mountainous tea plantations of Sri Lanka. These are very low income families; some even with almost no income at all. The area of Koslanda experienced continuous rain commencing the last week in October. On the 29th October 2014, tragedy struck the hilly slopes of Koslanda and a massive landslide occurred, burying a large number of houses situated along the slopes of the mountain. It was reported that more than 300 people lost their lives, with entire families engulfed by the mountain of wet sand that covered them. Those who escaped the landslide were camped in community halls and in other school halls close to the affected area. Many children, who were attending school at the time, lost both parents and were orphaned. This sad event was reported both day and night by the local media with requests for material assistance to those who had survived. This is a rare occurrence; a landslide of this scale has not been experienced previously in Sri Lanka. Therefore, to show our love and compassion at that tragic time, UCF upheld the survivors in prayer and was subsequently able to reach the stricken area, which had been cordoned off for security purposes, later to help by providing 150 families who were living in the camps of Moragolla and Diyanagala in Hali Ela of Badulla District with boxes of dry ration food items and blankets, towels, and soap. UCF conducted the disaster relief programme in both camps amidst heavy rain. UCF still seeks your prayers and contributions in whatever way possible in order to show our love and compassion through action, as demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ.

Additionally, they will be needing basic building supplies to rebuild their homes lost in the landslide. UCFSL hopes to help these villagers in this effort in the future. Your donations, big and small, are most appreciated as we seek to demonstrate God's love to the landslide victims.

Raigama village is situated at Bandaragama in the western part of Sri Lanka. Although a predominantly a non-Christian village, many of our believers live in this village. Due to the heavy rain that had ocurred the area was heavily flooded. A large number of houses in this small area were filled with 6-7 ft. of water and as a result the belongings of most families were destroyed. The people were evacuated and housed temporarily in the local school. UCF provided the believers and others, irrespective of race or religious background, with emergency flood relief, such as dry ration boxes, medicines and mosquito nets. Emergency flood relief was also provided to some believers and others in Badureliya in the western sector of Sri Lanka. This area too was badly affected by floods. Families earn their livelihood by working on the rubber plantations as laborers. They, too, lost their possessions and some deaths were recorded in the western sector as a result of the heavy flooding.

Landslide Disaster, Koslanda, Badulla District

Rev. Fernando recently met with officials at the Disaster Relief Management Office in Koslanda, the village destroyed by a recent landslide on 29 October 2014. UCFSL would like to help the victims, many of whom have lost everything, by providing them with some basic supplies and dry rations. Additionally, they will be needing basic building supplies to rebuild their homes lost in the landslide. UCFSL hopes to help these villagers in this effort in the future. Your donations, big and small, are most appreciated as we seek to demonstrate God's love to the landslide victims.
